SPF 101
What is SPF?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor — it shows how long your sunscreen protects you from UVB rays. SPF 30 means you can stay in the sun 30x longer before burning *if applied correctly*. Reapply to stay safe.
Source: AAD, Skin Cancer Foundation
What does 'broad spectrum' mean?
It means your sunscreen protects from both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays. Always choose broad spectrum.
Sources: FDA, Mayo Clinic
What SPF number is best?
SPF 30 blocks around 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks about 98%. That 1% may sound small, but it actually matters — especially if you’re outside a lot or live somewhere hot and sunny (like Saudi).
SPF 50 is usually recommended for people with sensitive skin, hyperpigmentation, or anyone looking for stronger, more reliable protection. It also gives a little more room for error if you forget to reapply or miss a spot.

What’s the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreen?
Mineral sunscreens (like ours) use ingredients like zinc oxide to physically block UV rays — they sit on top of your skin and reflect the rays away.
Chemical sunscreens absorb into your skin and use ingredients like oxybenzone, avobenzone, or octinoxate to convert UV into heat, which your skin then releases.
Here’s why mineral is the move:
• Gentler on sensitive skin (less risk of irritation, stinging, or breakouts)
• Reef-safe — doesn’t harm coral ecosystems like some chemical filters do
• Starts working immediately — no 20-minute wait
• Better for layering with makeup or actives
Sources: Harvard Health
Will mineral-based sunscreens sting around the eyes?
Not likely — mineral sunscreens are less irritating than chemical ones. But don’t rub it into your eyes.
Sources: Dermatologist Approved
Do I need sunscreen on cloudy days?
Yes — even on cloudy days or indoors. UV rays are sneaky and can pass through clouds. Apply sunscreen daily.
Sources: WHO, Skin Cancer Foundation
Does sunscreen block Vitamin D?
Not fully. It might lower UVB absorption a little, but you still get enough. If needed, take a supplement — don’t skip SPF.
Sources: Harvard Health, NIH
Is sunscreen necessary in winter?
Yes. UV rays reflect off snow and hit your skin even when it’s cold. Daylight = UV.
Sources: Skin Cancer Foundation, WHO
How much sunscreen should I apply?
For your face: 2 full fingers. For your body: around 30ml.
Sources: AAD
How often should I reapply sunscreen?
Every 2 hours — or right after swimming or sweating.
Sources: AAD, Mayo Clinic
Where does SPF go in my routine?
Last step before makeup — after moisturizer.
Sources: AAD
Can I layer different sunscreens?
Totally. Use one in the morning, and top up with a different format (like a stick) later.
Sources: Healthline
Does sunscreen expire?
Yes! Always check the expiration date on the package. Old SPF = less protection.
Sources: FDA
Do I really need SPF every day?
Yes — even on cloudy days or indoors. UV rays are sneaky and can pass through windows.
Sources: AAD, WHO
Can I use SPF if I have acne?
Yes — mineral sunscreens are actually preferred for acne-prone skin. They don’t clog pores and help soothe irritation.
Sources: AAD, Healthline
Does SPF prevent tanning?
It reduces tanning by blocking UVB rays, but some pigment may still develop with sun exposure.
Sources: Skin Cancer Foundation
Can sunscreen brighten my skin?
Not directly — but it prevents dark spots and uneven tone from sun damage. That means clearer skin over time.
Sources: American Academy of Dermatology (AAD)
Will SPF prevent aging?
Yes — sunscreen is scientifically proven to help prevent signs of aging.
Sources: Harvard Health
Is higher SPF always better?
Up to a point. SPF 30–50 is ideal. Anything higher adds only minimal extra protection.
Sources: American Academy of Dermatology (AAD)
Can sunscreen brighten my skin?
Not directly — but it prevents dark spots and uneven tone from sun damage. That means clearer skin over time.
Sources: American Academy of Dermatology (AAD)
Can I skip SPF if my foundation has SPF?
Nope — you’d need to apply a huge amount of foundation to get the full protection. Always use a separate sunscreen.
Sources: Skin Cancer Foundation
Does SPF help with hyperpigmentation?
Yes! It helps prevent dark spots from getting darker and supports even tone.
Sources: Harvard Health
Does sunscreen work immediately?
Mineral SPF does — it protects as soon as it’s applied. No waiting needed.
Sources: FDA
Can I use SPF while breastfeeding?
Using sunscreen on your body while breastfeeding is generally considered safe.
Mineral sunscreens (like zinc oxide) are often preferred because they sit on the skin rather than being absorbed, making them a common choice for breastfeeding parents. However, always avoid applying SPF directly on or around the nipple area, and check with your doctor if you have concerns or unique medical conditions.
Our SPF contains zinc oxide, and we formulated it with gentle, skin-supportive ingredients — but always follow your healthcare provider’s guidance.
Sources: La Leche League, AAD
Is SPF safe to use with retinol?
Yes — and dermatologists actually recommend using SPF when you’re using retinol.
Retinol can increase your skin’s sensitivity to UV rays, which means daily sunscreen is essential to help protect your skin and avoid irritation or hyperpigmentation.
Our formula is mineral-based and includes soothing ingredients like bisabolol and vitamin E, which can complement retinol use — but always follow your dermatologist’s advice when combining active ingredients.
Sources: AAD, Healthline
How long does SPF protection last?
About 2 hours — after that, it breaks down and needs to be reapplied.
Sources: Skin Cancer Foundation
What’s the best SPF level?
SPF 30 is the minimum recommended. SPF 50 is ideal for strong sun like Saudi.
Sources: AAD
Does SPF protect against blue light?
Mineral sunscreens with iron oxides may offer some blue light protection. But more research is still emerging.
Sources: Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology
How do I reapply SPF during the day?
Use an SPF stick or spray every 2 hours. Swipe generously over exposed areas — even over makeup.
Sources: American Academy of Dermatology (AAD)
Can I use sunscreen on tattoos?
Yes — SPF helps protect tattoo pigment and prevents fading.
Sources: DermNet
Can sunscreen go bad in heat?
Yes — heat can break down the formula. Don’t leave it in the car.
Sources: FDA
Is SPF safe around facial hair or beards?
Yes — just make sure to rub it in well to reach skin underneath.
Sources: ADD
Can I wear SPF while working out?
Yes — but reapply after sweating.
Sources: FDA
Is SPF still effective if I use skincare acids?
Yes — and it’s even more important. Acids make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
Sources: Harvard Dermatology
Can sunscreen go under the eyes?
Yes — just avoid getting it into your eyes. Mineral SPFs are less likely to sting.
Sources: ADD
Should I use sunscreen if I stay indoors all day?
If you sit near windows, yes! UVA rays penetrate glass.
Sources: WHO
Why mineral, not chemical?
Mineral filters like zinc oxide sit on the skin and block UV rays — no absorption, no irritation, no guesswork.
They’re better for sensitive skin, hold up in high heat, and are considered reef-safe.
We avoid chemical filters like oxybenzone and octinoxate because they’re linked to skin reactions and coral bleaching.
It’s a cleaner choice — for your skin and the environment.

Brand Story
What does the name Borderline Beauty mean?
The name is a wordplay rooted in Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) — a mental health diagnosis often misunderstood or stigmatized. By naming the brand Borderline Beauty, we’re reclaiming the word “borderline” to show that beauty can exist even in emotional extremes, in contradiction, and in the in-between.
It’s also a reflection of our twofold mission:
to create thoughtful beauty products that care for real skin, and to spark honest dialogue around mental health — especially the parts that are often misunderstood, like BPD.
Even the logo tells this story — the last “R” in “Border” is flipped, facing left, while the first “B” faces right. This creates a visual border between the two words, representing the internal push and pull so many people experience. It’s a subtle visual metaphor for inner conflict, mirrored identities, and finding beauty within what society may call “too much” or “too messy.”
It’s a brand born from contrast — and a belief that beauty can live in the complexity, not just the calm.
Where are your products made?
Our formulas are developed in South Korea, with packaging and finishing done in Saudi Arabia.
Where is Borderline Beauty from?
We’re a Saudi brand — built, led, and rooted in the Gulf.
When was the brand founded?
Borderline Beauty was established in May 2021 by a young Saudi female.
What makes the brand different?
We’re the first in the Middle East to focus entirely on sun care — not as an add-on, but as the core of what we do.
We design around what people actually skip: sunscreen. Our formulas are 100% mineral, developed with manufacturers who specialize in functional skincare.
Are you the first Saudi sun care brand?
Yes — Borderline Beauty is the first Saudi-born brand dedicated to modern, minearal sun protection.
Why does Borderline Beauty exist?
Because we live in one of the hottest, driest, most sun-exposed regions in the world — and yet, there wasn’t a single Saudi brand built around sun care.
That didn’t make sense to us. So we started one.
At the same time, mental health isn’t often part of the beauty conversation here — even though it matters just as much.
We combined both ideas into one purpose: sun care that protects your skin, and represents what’s often left out.
What’s the focus of the brand?
Sun protection that blends into daily life — no heavy layers, no residue, no overpromises.
What’s your long-term goal as a brand?
Our long-term mission goes beyond skincare.
We started with sun care because we’re genuinely passionate about it — and because we saw a gap in a region with one of the world’s harshest climates. That passion will grow into a full skin health system designed for our realities.
But just as important is our commitment to mental health. It’s not a marketing message — it’s part of why we exist.
We aim to create the first beauty-backed mental health impact program in the region — including building a dedicated fund, developing awareness initiatives, and eventually allocating proceeds to support real services and education.
We don’t just want to launch products. We want to shift the conversation — and use this brand to make space where there wasn’t space before.
Is this the first beauty brand to talk about mental health in the region?
Yes — mental health is central to our identity. We’re the first beauty brand in the region to treat it as a real part of the conversation.
Is mental health part of your brand story?
Yes — it’s a core part of our identity. Mental health is real, relevant, and often overlooked in the region. We created this brand to give it space — without stigma.
What kind of products do you make?
All products fall under functional sun care. We don’t do “skincare with SPF.” We do SPF with skincare logic.
Why did you choose Korean manufacturing?
Because South Korea leads the industry in innovation and mineral SPF technology. We work with labs that understand function, not just texture
The borderline breakdown
Are your products vegan and cruelty-free?
Yes — we don’t use animal-derived ingredients and we never test on animals.
Are your products halal?
They contain no animal ingredients, but they are not officially halal-certified.
Is your packaging recyclable?
Yes! Our components are made to be recyclable — check your local guidelines to dispose properly.
Do you offer refills?
Not yet — but it’s in the works!
How do I recycle the packaging?
Separate the parts (cap, base, etc.) and recycle based on your local system.
Do you offer samples?
Not right now — but we’re working on it!
Why is your price higher than drugstore sunscreens?
Because we don’t cut corners. We use high-quality mineral UV filters, skin-supportive ingredients like squalane, peptides, and ceramides, and formulate everything in advanced Korean labs — the same labs trusted by global skincare leaders.
And while it might feel like drugstore SPFs are cheaper, the reality is:
• Most local and global sunscreens with similar ingredients and performance actually cost the same or more — especially when they’re mineral-based and designed to blend invisibly.
• We don’t believe in filler formulas or watered-down skincare. Every ingredient is there for a reason — and your skin deserves that level of intention.
You’re not just paying for sun protection — you’re paying for formulation integrity, invisible wear on all skin tones, and a product that genuinely supports your skin barrier while protecting it.

Is your sunscreen safe for sensitive skin?
While our formula is not specifically tested for sensitive skin, it was made to be gentle and non-irritating for most skin types. It’s free from parabens and alcohol — two common ingredients that can trigger irritation. It also contains skin-conditioning ingredients like squalane, bisabolol, and ceramides to help support the skin barrier.
If your skin is highly sensitive or reactive, we recommend patch testing before full use.

Is your product safe around the eyes?
Yes — apply gently. Our mineral formula is less likely to sting.
Sources: Sephora, Glossier, Rhode, Zara, Shopify, local delivery platforms
Can I use this on kids?

Absolutely. Skin is skin — SPF is for everyone.
Sources: AAD
Can I use it on my neck and hands?
Yes — apply it to any skin that sees the sun.
Sources: AAD
Are your SPF's non-comedogenic?
Our formula includes ingredients known not to clog pores — like zinc oxide, squalane, and bisabolol — which are often recommended for breakout-prone or reactive skin. While it hasn’t been officially certified, it was made with skin clarity and comfort in mind.
Sources: American Academy of Dermatology (AAD)
Is it suitable for oily skin?
We designed our formula to feel lightweight and absorb smoothly without leaving a greasy residue. Every skin is different, so we recommend trying it out and seeing how it feels on your skin type.
Sources: American Academy of Dermatology (AAD)
Will sunscreen make my skin oily?
Not if it’s a good formula. Ours is lightweight and absorbs fast — no grease, no shine.
Sources: AAD, DermNet
Is your sunscreen water-resistant?
The Sun Stick formula isn’t marketed as water-resistant, so if you’re swimming or sweating, it’s best to reapply right after. That said, its balm-like texture does help it stay on the skin better than liquid formulas in daily, non-water settings.
Can sunscreen clog pores?
Some do — that’s why we formulated ours with breakout-prone skin in mind.
While many sunscreens can feel greasy or heavy, we carefully selected ingredients that are lightweight and non-pore-clogging by nature, including:
• Zinc Oxide — a mineral filter known to be gentle on acne-prone skin
• Squalane — hydrates without feeling oily
• Bisabolol & Vitamin E — help calm irritation and support skin clarity
• Peptides & Ceramides — strengthen the skin barrier without congestion
While we haven’t done a separate comedogenicity test, we chose ingredients that are widely recognized as suitable for sensitive and breakout-prone skin.
